Ginkgo biloba, often known as ginkgo or gingko, and also known as the maidenhair tree, is the only living species in the Ginkgophyta division; all others are extinct. It belongs to a very old genus, one whose fossils date as far back as 200 million years. It has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including altitude sickness (prevention), cerebral vascular insufficiency, dementia, cognitive disorders, intermittent claudication, macular degeneration/glaucoma, memory loss, premenstrual syndrome, SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and as a vasodilator.
